Hannah Benn

This image of the second Mrs George Manger has been reproduced from a fading nineteenth century carte de visite in the possession of the subject's great grand-daughter. The approximate overall size of the card is 2½" x 4¼".

The photograph details taken together suggest a date of about 1870.   The subject is seated next to a table against a plain background. Her dress is a crinoline, the bodice having sloping shoulders and trimmed epaulettes. The ribbon cap is worn on top of a plain centre-parted hairstyle covering the ears. These details point to the early 1860s. The ring, which is prominently displayed, could be of black jet (her mother died in 1861) - but could equally be a red or green engagement ring (she married in 1850) - both these colours would photograph black.

On the other hand, that would mean she was in her forties when the photo was taken and she looks older, even taking account of the different standards of the nineteenth century.

Looking at the characteristics of the card itself, it can be seen that the corners of the mount are rounded, there is a medium-sized border around the picture and the image size is approximately 2" x 3½". These details point to the early 1870s, when Hannah Benn would have been in her mid-fifties.
