2 Feb 1861   Mary Hannah Manger was born in Lutterworth, the ninth child of George Manger (42), brick maker's labourer, and the fourth of Hannah Benn (43). (She was the fourth and last child of her father's second marriage. Her christian names were those of her father's first and second wives.)   Birth certificates; BMD index

Late 1870s   She had a studio photograph taken. Apart from the fact that she is not wearing a wedding ring in the photo, the dating evidence is as follows:- the picture is a cabinet print [1870-1900], having curved corners, an ornate back with all-over design and brown lettering [1870+]; the background is neutral, with curtains [1860s]; there is a padded, elaborate chair, leant on rather than sat on [1865+]; the figure is threequarter length [1870+]; she is wearing a fitted suit, almost military [1880s]; there is a sloping line to the bustle [1870+]; no epaulettes [1870+]; her ears are exposed [1865+]. Mar 1880   Her nephew, George Benn Manger, died in Lutterworth, aged 5.   Lutterworth parish register
22 Mar 1880   At 19, she was married in Leicester Register Office to Alfred Bates (23), timekeeper at Phoenix Iron Works, Leicester. Her age was stated as 21 (she was actually just over 19), and she was 3-4 months pregnant. The wedding was witnessed by her father and 'Emma Manger', who was probably not her 35-year-old half-sister (whose name was now Emma Masters) but a cousin.
