The name on the mount of this photograph, W F Brooke, is that of a railway clerk who lived 2 or 3 doors from the Bates, in Larch Street, Leicester, and later became their son-in-law. The domestic background and off-framing make it seem likely that Brooke was an amateur photographer who took the photo and developed and printed it for the family. It shows Mr and Mrs Bates and their surviving children - George, Margaret, Emma E, Annie, Mary H and (in the front) Winifred. Since Winifred was born in February 1899, the date may be estimated as about 1902.
