Date   Event   Source
(9 Jul 1780   A Mary Hickling, daughter of Aaron Hickling and Sarah Gad, was christened in Hathern. Although this would tie in with the age recorded on her death certificate, it would entail accepting the birth of her last child in her early 50s - very unlikely.)   IGI
14 Jul 1783   Another Mary Hickling, daughter of John Hickling and Ann, was christened at Hathern. This one entailing a final child at about 47 - unusual but possible.   IGI
11 Jun 1810   When she was about 27, she married George Wallis (about 42, probably a widower). She signed the register, while he left his mark. The witnesses were Samuel Hickling (possibly an unknown brother: a Samuel Hickling married Mary Sibson in 1807 at Hathern and it might be worth checking the register for the witnesses to that wedding) and Mary Pollard.   Hathern parish register
14 Apr 1811   Her first recorded child by George Wallis, Elizabeth, was christened at Hathern 9 or 10 months after the wedding. (A John Hickling, son of Mary Hickling, was christened at Hathern on 28 Dec 1807. It is not known whether George was this boy's father - nor even whether George's Mary Hickling was the boy's mother. To add to the difficulty, George and Mary's next child was christened 8 months later and also named John - see next.)   Hathern parish register
6 Dec 1811   John Wallis, son of George Wallis and Mary, was christened at Hathern. (The previous John - John Hickling - may have died, or this may have been a re-christening of the 4 year old, or he may have been part of a different family.)   Hathern parish register
9 Feb 1815   Edward, son of George and Mary Wallis, was christened at Loughborough (2½ miles from Hathern).   IGI
30 mar 1817   When she was about 33, her next child, Alice, was christened at Hathern.   Hathern parish register
1 Jun 1823   The double christening of two more children, Mary and Sarah, took place at Hathern.   Hathern parish register
22 Jun 1826   Samuel, son of George Wallis and his wife Mary, was christened at Hathern.   Hathern parish register
1829-30   Her daughter, Lucy, was born.   1851 census
1831-2   When she was about 47 her last child, Ann, was born.   1851 census
6 Jun 1841   She was living at Pinfold Gate, Loughborough, with her husband, George, a stockinger aged 70 (rounded down from 72, as required), daughters Mary, 'Alice' (should be Lucy) and Ann - and 'Ann Hickling, aged 75', very possibly her mother.   Census
30 Mar 1851   At 68, she was still living at Pinfold Row, Loughborough, with her husband, George, and daughters, Lucy and Ann.   Census
24 Dec 1860   Her husband died of 'decay' at the age of 92.   Death certificate
1861   She was residing in the house of her son-in-law, Charles Collins, in Loughborough. Her age was recorded as 75, supporting that given on the previous census.   Census
7 Jan 1863   Mary Hickling died of 'decay of nature' at the Union Workhouse, Loughborough, 'widow of George Wallis, a stocking framework knitter.' Her age was recorded as 82, which is assumed to be incorrect (see above) - she was probably about 76.
