James Cooke's death certificate shows he died aged 72 of dropsy at 13 Wigston Street, Leicester.

'Present at the death' was Matilda Dye, a 50-year-old laundress, who lived nearby at 3 Wigston Street with her husband and two children.

There is some evidence to suggest that a member of Matilda Dye's family, one Nellie Dye, may have been the illegitimate child of one of James' sons.
