2 Sep 1832   George Bates was born in Coventry. He was the second known child of Henry Bates (28), silk dyer, and Mary Essex (26), ribbon weaver. (Their first known child, Henry, died aged 7 months before George was born.)   Family birthday book;

22 Jul 1855   When he was 22, he married Emma Manning, a silk winder (she was probably 23, although the certificate says 22) at St Thomas's Church, Coventry, by banns. The address of both was Earlsdon Street. The witnesses were Henry Bates (his father) and Sarah Mills (not known).   Marriage certificate

3 Apr 1881   He was 48 and living at 102 [Much] Park Street, Coventry. Five of his children were still living at home. His occupation was now general labourer.   Census
5 Apr 1891   At 58 he had become a licensed victualler, living at 76 Much Park Street, Coventry. Also at home were his wife, his 28-year-old unmarried daughter, Emma, a dressmaker, and his son, Herbert, 19.   Census
3 Apr 1893   His wife, Emma, died at 76 Much Park Street, of heart disease. She was buried at London Road Civic Cemetery on 6 April.   Death certificate;

24 Dec 1911   George Bates died at his daughter's house on Christmas Eve of heart failure brought on by bronchitis. He was 79.
