Nelly Newton

Nelly Newton's entry in the marriage register of St Leonard's Church, Leicester, includes her residence at the time of the marriage as '60 Abbey Gate', providing conclusive evidence that the head of the Lewitt household, recorded on the 1881 census as occupying 60 Abbey Gate, can have been none other than James Newton.

Note also that one of the witnesses at this wedding was John Thacker, the husband of the bride's older sister, Louisa L – further corroboration that this James Newton is the man who married Ann Cooke in 1848.
