Dating evidence — Apart from the Edwardian hats, the presence of William E Thacker on the back row wearing the same cap as in a photo dated 1905-6 (see his Gallery), gives this picture an estimated date of 1903-6.

If the middle row is indeed occupied by the Newton sisters then no doubt the one on Louisa's right is the youngest, Betsy. That would make the man with his hand on her shoulder her second husband, James A Allsop.

As pure speculation, one might further identify the sisters as follows (L to R, with their approximate ages in brackets) —

Nelly (41), Maria (38), Betsy (37), Louisa (55), Ann (50), Ada (43), and Alice (47).
