1827-1830   Joseph Ward was born in Leicester, the son of Robert (?40), a framework knitter, and Ann (?34), a stitcher.
The 1871 census gives his age as 43 (1827-8) and 1851 as 21 (1829-30). The Welford Road burial register has age 54 (1829-30).

1841   Aged 11, he was living with his family at ?Martins Yard, Leicester. His siblings were recorded as Robert (15), Sarah (14), Michael (6) and Thomas (2).   Census
1851   By the time he was about 21, he was a brickmaker['s labourer] living with his parents at 81 Northgate Street, Leicester. Also in the house on census night were his presumed brothers and sisters: Sarah (24), Michael (23), Jonas (22), Emily (1), and Lilith (?) (an infant). Apart from Sarah's, these ages don't tie in with those given on the previous census, and the infants are too young to be children of Ann Parsons.

23 Feb 1859   When he was 29, his mother, Ann Ward, died of consumption at Fortunes of War Yard, Northgate, age 63. She was buried on 27 Feb at Welford Road.   Death certificate

1861   His address was 4 Northgate Street (looks like No 2 Fortunes of War Yard). His occupation was still brickmaker['s labourer]. Also in the house: Robert Ward (70), his father, a framework knitter born in Leicester; Mary Ward [Mary Hunt] (26), 'wife of Joseph', born in South Croxton; William Thomas (2) 'son', and Ann Naomi (10m) 'dau', both born in All Saints. 24 Apr 1863   His son, Henry Edwin, died of whooping cough, aged 14 months; he was buried at Welford Road Cemetery 2 days later. The death was registered by Mary Ward, present at the death, Tiger/Digex Yard, Northgate; son of Joseph Ward, bricklayer's labourer.   Death certificate

30 Dec 1864   When he was 35, his eldest son, William Thomas, died aged 6 of 'confluent variola [smallpox], 13 days; vaccinated'. This time the death was registered by the grandmother, Susannah Greenwood, of Ballinson's Yard, George Street, Belgrave Gate. 6 Mar 1866   His son, Frank, died aged 9 months of 'diarrohea, manasmus' and was buried at Welford Road on 11 March. (Son of Joseph Ward, brickyard labourer.) Present at the death: Hannah Berry, Court x.   Death certificate
15 Apr 1866   His daughter, Ann Naomi, died of convulsions, aged 5. Again, the death was registered by the grandmother, Susannah Greenwood, of Ballinson's Yard, George Street, Belgrave Gate. The certificate says daughter of Joseph Ward, bricklayer's labourer.   Death certificate
8 Apr 1866   His daughter, Ann Naomi, was buried Welford Rd. The register says aged 6; the death certificate says aged 5.
It seems that Joseph and Mary had therefore so far had between four and six children, and all of them had died in infancy at Northgate Street.

1871   He gave his age as 43, although he was probably about 41, his occupation as bricklayer's labourer, his address 4 Court X, 1 Northgate Street. He was living alone.   Census

1881   He gave his age as 51, a bricklayer's labourer, living at 8 Harding Terrace, Northgate Street.   Census
27 Aug 1884   He died at the age of 54 of 'chronic Bright's disease'. Ann Frith was present at the death [an Ann Frith, charwoman and seamstress, appears not far away on previous censuses].   Death certificate
30 Aug 1884   He was buried at Welford Road, in plot UO 1143. The register says he was 54; his address Harding Terrace.
