Mary Hunt was born on 1 October 1869 at 4 X Court, Northgate Street, Leicester. Her grandmother registered the birth on 9 November. The father's name does not appear on the birth certificate, and later censuses indicate that Mary was brought up by her grandparents, not by her father. He continued to live alone nearby until his death in 1884.
